Burnt Out to Blissed Out

One thing that helps me flourish (and keeps me sane) as a modern, single, working mummy is meditation. It is one of the best tools, I have learnt and a core component of my life and business.

 

Psychology Today says;

"Meditation is the practice of turning your attention to a single point of reference. It can involve focusing on the breath, on bodily sensations, or on a word or phrase known as a mantra. In other words, meditation means turning your attention away from distracting thoughts and focusing on the present moment. Meditating is deceptively simple."

 

I like to meditate twice a day once, first thing in the morning to give me an energy boost to start the day and then just before my evening meal, to reset my energy as I go into the evening.

 

It's especially useful as a boost when I have been looking at my laptop screen too long too, and my eyes are tired and sore or I"m feeling frazzled.

 

I usually meditate for either 10/20 minutes at a time, which is very manageable, I have even been known to meditate in the car on my lunch break!

 

Sometimes I repeat a mantra, sometimes I listen to a guided meditation, or sometimes I will sit in total silence.

 

I also use mindfulness meditation with my EFT clients during treatments.




For those new to meditation, I highly recommend the FREE 21 Day meditation experiences with Deepak Chopra and Oprah Winfrey, as it's the closest thing to Transcendental Meditation I have found.

I recommend this to all my clients, and the challenge is beautifully produced, easy to follow and about ten mins long, so extremely easy to fit into a busy schedule.

Yoga You Time with Karen Goldman

This week, I would love to introduce my beautiful friend, Karen Goldman.

Karen is my hot yoga teacher, ex-recruitment manager, and a single mummy of three (I have no idea how she does it, I only have two!).

Going to a yoga class carves out a moment in your week that is just for you! It’s time for personal observation of your physical and mental state.

 

It’s a time for reflection and a time for you to let go of physical and emotional residue that is left behind by your hectic schedule.

 

There are many different ways to practice yoga, and each teacher has a unique way of presenting these techniques.


A Yin, restorative or slow flow yoga practices embrace the relaxed side of the posture. Instead of recruiting muscles to stabilise a posture the asanas are performed mostly on the ground and are supported by props like bolsters, blankets, blocks and straps. Relying on the props to ‘hold’ the shape of the posture the student can fully relax their body — removing all physical effort.

 

If you know, you need to slow down, and you want to connect to a slower pace of movement and connect with your body, mind and emotions these styles of practice can be really beneficial.

 

They are also fantastic for people who find more dynamic styles of yoga too physically demanding.

 

Training the physical body is similar to training the mind - it takes time and consistent effort.

 

Training the mind is important because everything that happens in your life starts in your mind!

 

Our thoughts become words, our words become actions, and our actions become our relationships, projects, accomplishments, regrets and triumphs.

 

Your thoughts are the beginning of the manifestation of your life. You are - what you think!

 

When we first sit down and close our eyes we ‘see’ our thoughts - a whirlwind of feelings, wants, dislikes, memories of the past and our imaginations of the future.


A mind is often a messy place! If our mind is cloudy - full of confusion, desires and powerful emotions, it is difficult to be useful in anything that we do.


We are a slave to our emotions, and this leads to a life full of turmoil and distress. Master your mind, and you can do anything!


Practising yoga even once a week can help to negate the residue that life leaves behind. You may never be able to do a headstand or sit in meditation for an hour on the floor with your legs crossed but who cares.


If you spend an hour a week doing some light stretching, relaxing breathing exercises and just being still you will notice a profound change in your awareness of both yourself and what’s going on around you.

 

You will manage stress better, your balance, strength and flexibility will improve, your ability to concentrate will grow, you will sleep better, and you will strengthen your immune system.


Before we can settle our thoughts first, we must learn to master where we place our attention.

 

Training our attention is a simple matter of practising concentration exercises.

 

By deepening our ability to focus our attention, we will become more effective in everything that we set out to do.

 

Observing what is happening in your mind, on the way to settling our thoughts, will also teach you a lot about you.

 

When you decide to take on the practice of yoga and meditation that is precisely what we are doing. You turn your attention inward, using various techniques and spend time observing ‘where you are’ - physically, emotionally and mentally.

 

The result is a return and reconnection to Self,

Leaving feeling clear, grounded and present.
