I went to have a coffee with a friend last week, she was visiting from London and we hadn’t seen each other for a good few months so there was plenty to catch up on!
“Where have you been, you look so well and lovely and brown?” she asked as I sat down opposite her in one of our coffee shops in the village.
“Nowhere, I have just been enjoying some of this amazing weather we have been having recently and I have started going for Reiki once a month too, so I feel quite energised and less tired”
The conversation switched to talk of work, kids, partners and I could see she had something on her mind and she seemed to be a little anxious.
She began to tell me that she had no time for herself lately, she hadn’t been looking after herself properly, she said she felt ‘Burnout’. I listened as one problem leads to another and that my friend sounded a little depressed. I waited until she finished telling me that her father in law had died a few months previously and that there was a lot to sort out and that things were quite stressful at home.
“Sorry to ramble on, I bet you think I am really sad”! she said as she half laughed and started to finish the coffee that must have been cold, she looked very preoccupied.
“Not at all, it’s really good to talk and you know I am always here for you if you need anything” was my response.
“Thanks, that means a lot, just don’t know what to do with myself, I need a big magic wand to sort me out” she cajoled.
I sat and checked my phone as I had another appointment, but I could tell my friend needed a break.
I have such a lot going on myself, running my own business, family life and making sure I look after myself, wellbeing is so important to me, but I knew my friend was not in a good place… I didn’t want to be patronising by suggesting she went for some Reiki, it isn’t a magic wand, but we all live in the real world, and we know that just doesn’t exist.
“It’s been so good to see you, and you look so radiant, I don’t know how you do it with your busy life, what’s your secret?”
“There is no secret, but I can tell you that since I met my Reiki Practitioner it really has changed my life, I have a Reiki Treatment once a month and it just kind of balanced me out, I feel energised, and it helps me to sleep so much better.”
“How do I get a Reiki Practitioner?” she quickly asked sounded really desperate.
“Well I did some research a while ago after reading an article in a women’s well-being magazine, and I thought I would give it a go.”
I told her that I had been going through a stressful time at work and was starting my own company and not sleeping well. I said that I found a couple of local practitioners through some local groups on Facebook and tried two practitioners, they were slightly different from each other but the one I chose made me feel really comfortable so I stuck with her, and I was keeping it up on a monthly basis as I felt it was a great investment in my general mental health and day to day living.
I said that she needed to do some research in her area of practitioners and seek out the best one for her, I advised her that a Reiki practitioner never make recommendations outside of their expertise and certainly should not give you any grandiose claims or make promises to heal you of life-threatening illness or conditions.
She straight away said
“I am not dying, I am just exhausted and never switch off.”
“I think it will help you in so many ways, you must try it, when you find the right person you will know intuitively that they are the right practitioner for you and make you feel comfortable and relaxed in their presence.”
“What does this Reiki business do to you though” she sounded puzzled.
“Usually on the first visit the practitioner will go through a few questions with you to get a bit of background, but they wouldn’t be evasive, and I said they will assure you of what is going on throughout the treatment, whether they touch you or not, it depends on the practitioner.”
My friend looked a bit confused and I assured her that it would be a simple hand touch on the body where the practitioner might need to focus on a certain area and that is was quite normal and all part of the treatment.
“It makes you feel so relaxed when you are in the treatment, you escape from everything and sometimes you fall asleep” I said.
“Wow, that sounds amazing, just what I need” she replied.
“It has so many benefits to it though, the practitioner will be able to find out through certain areas of your body what is actually going on with you, stress, anxiety, problems with your health and all kinds of things, they can then make suggestions for you”
“Wow, it really does sound like a magic wand” !!
